Piperâs heart raced. If there was one thing they wanted to learn from Jack, it was how to be so self-assured. The woman was unflappable. Sure, she got annoyed, but no matter what happened she took it in her stride.
Piper, on the other hand, was shaking. Sure, sheâd said she was okay, but theyâd just watched a man open a mirror portal to another dimension. Then, theyâd walked through the mirror into that other dimension.
They knew they were in another dimension because there was a smell in the air theyâd never smelt before, and when they looked up, the stars made no sense. They were certainly not the stars Piper had looked at from Earth.
There were blank patches in the sky, where there were no stars at all. In other parts of the sky the stars were moving in slow arcs and spirals. And they werenât just silvery gold, there were red ones and blue ones and purple ones.
Piper grabbed for Jackâs hand and clutched it. Jack didnât seem to notice.
âThis is the path.â Raphael pointed at the ground.
They stood on a worn, flat path through grass and shrubs. It was clear, and seemed to glow ever so slightly.
âIt goes right through Faerie. If you have a clear intention of where you want to go, itâll take you there, eventually. It branches off. When you come to a fork, just trust your gut,â Raphael said.
âMaybe you could guide us through?â Emmaline said, turning to her brother and making her eyes all big at him. Such a younger sibling move, Piper thought.
âPlease? I mean, you know so much about it all and I know almost nothing.â
âYeah, all right. I can take you some of the way, but if youâre going to go into any Court land I canât follow, Iâm too tied to the Raven King, and heâs a free fey. They wonâtââ He stopped himself from whatever heâd been about to say, then said, âbe polite to me.â
âIf itâs that dangerous, donât worry about it,â Emmaline said, changing her tone instantly from pleading, helpless little sister to self-assured. âI have a couple tricks up my sleeve if anything happens.â
âNo, Iâll take you a little of the way. That right there is Gerardâs house.â He pointed at a quaint brick cottage. Piper took a long look at it, memorising it.
âAw, itâs exactly how I imagined,â Emmaline said, clasping her hands together.
âI think I had a fairy tale storybook which had this exact house in one of the illustrations,â Piper said. âI think it was Grandmaâs cottage in Red Riding Hood.â
Raphael chuckled. âI wouldnât be surprised if Gerard had the same book and designed the house to match it. Heâs a big reader.â
âSo, we come back here by following the path?â Jack asked. Her hand was on the pepper spray and baton holster on her belt. Piper felt for their own weapon, they werenât at all sure if either weapon would be any good against the fey, though.
âThatâs right. The path will lead you back here.
